Well i suppose, assume and hope their intentions are good. but then again it is the Government.
I just hope that what ever happens and however it happens it just promotes responsible pet ownership and not a total ban on it due to red tape etc. Especially as i would like to start collecting some snakes in the future.

It says in the post on sareptiles that you may not import, transport, breed, keep or trade in the non-pet species without a permit.
As tarantulas are listed as pet species, you would be able to do all of the above. They will not be governed by permits, so I do not see how selling/breeding would affect anything?

Do you see the confusion now? When they talk about pet species in the description, they refer to the keeping and transporting. They failed to mention selling, breeding, etc.

Intentional or unintentional, you never know.

Think you are reading way too much into something that isn't there. Tarantulas will not be put on permit, so there is no need to list every activity in the paper.

You can make it public. Spoke to Ian yesterday regarding this. Direct quotes from him: "Okay, in that case it's still open to public comment and changes can be made." and "It will be published in the Gazette first, with instructions for comments. There should also be public workshops.

I think this legislation is a bit unclear and does worry me a bit. I agree T's are safe for now but that doc looks pretty open ended to me and open to interpretation.

There is no way that they are going to mention all of the 900 odd species (excluding locals obviously) of exotic tarantula. Not even proffesional arachnologists know all the species (Especially when you look at all tarantulas named Avic sp. or Pamphobeteus sp. that are going around)

Sure there are a few venomous exotic snakes in the hobby, but how many venomous lizards and monitors are there in the country? A pet species is referred to (According to Bushvipers original post on sareptiles) as non venomous reptiles.
The only one's that I have heard they want to ban of the non venomous reptiles is Bearded dragons and Burmese pythons (With good reason, as there seems to be breeding "colonies" of these in Limpopo)

If the law does go through, people who keep these venomous reptiles will have to apply for permits, which is not the end of the world.
