@Cascade: You do get rat poison that biodegrades after the rat has eaten it and will then be safe if your cat or dog gets a hold of he dead rat.

Check the Bayers products at your local farm supplier like Obaro etc. I have used one called Racium before and it worked well.

Rats can climb just about anything so putting the roaches in the cupboard won't help. Instead of replacing all the ceiling boards put the ratex in peanut butter and put it up in the ceiling. I have never met a rat that can pass up peanut butter. The kids can't get to it and the cats won't be interested. I have used this method quite a few times and it has always worked.

Thanks for all the advice!
I put more rat-ex out(in peanut butter), and tried the Flour and cement.

On Saturday afternoon I was showing my friends Brother my Snake and spiders when I noticed something funny behind my Isopod container, White bits of plastic, there was a massive hole in the one side.

On opening the container and lifting the pieces of bark and egg cartoons I got a shock to my system, I felt sick  , pissed off and just Bluuuu :pinch: .Not to mention what my neighbours must thought (The Curse words that came out of my mouth  and the Banging noises that wore coming from the flat)

The bladdy rat had ate my hole breeding stock of Isopods and my Roaches that wore living with the isopods, out of 300 odd I think there is maybe 40 left over!!

He ate them every so nicely and arranged some of the left over’s in nice round balls and placed them back into the container ;)

The flat is in a state but I managed to find two nest, one made in a Polystyrene sheet and the 2nd in a spear length of 110mm sewer pipe!

I also found a hole that they had opened that leads to the outside.

One rat got away through the hole! ( which is now concreted closed) the other rat is still in the flat somewhere, I had a run in with her last night,I surprised her when I went to check on my spiders and roaches at about 20:30, it was 20cm away from me, busy eating the cement and flour cover cat pellets, almost had the bugger but they can climb walls faster than I can get to it

We live and we learn the hard way!

Glad to hear that you might be winning the war with the buggers. Good Luck. I know of a guy that sells rat traps in Pretoria that are fail proof if you don't come right with your current approuch.

Its a cage like setup that prevents your other pet from getting to the bait and then once the rat is in it cann't get back out.
