ive been following most of the posts over the past 4-5 months and ive seen the same thing in other industries and hobbies and most of the times the ones complaining about other people making money off of there hobby "and making a quick buck" are only doing so because they are scared that they them selves will lose out on sales and they are often trying to make a quick buck themselves!

as most of the people have expressed in the passed that they would rather buy from an experienced breeder. And you consider yourself to be an experienced breeder. then what are you worried about?

unless you are worried that other people dont consider you an experienced breeder, and that publicly attacking noobs breeding attemps will make others consider you to be more experienced?

@Creator, i'm not a BIG TIME breeder, so I wouldn't know. You're a great guy and I get along well with you - but I disagree with your "cash is king" mentality as you know lol - so as we did at your house the last time I visited you, we agree to disagree.

But I do agree that some of the "BIG TIME" breeders are the culprits behind over saturation and they too simply move one when something is not selling. I also agree that breeding with most species is not difficult, just basic conditions need to be met and experience certainly counts. Luckily you are sharing your experience with Linn, so she should do quite well. That's a compliment - just to clarify. HS

@Whitestar7 - You're right, profiteers hate competition. But as above, I'm not a big time breeder so I'm not part of this classification, unless you weren't talking about me? HS

@Linn - Maybe Mavericks is the better term, not noobs. But I can't tell the difference at the moment. Most noobs that called me this week knew more than I did, like that T.blondi are cheap and lay 1000's of eggs at a time. So I guess a noob stops being a noob when he thinks he knows it all. Stop trying to classify it or define it, you know what I'm talking about.

You also cannot at all relate the cat world to Tarantulas. Your experience there means nothing here, there might be a few trends that are similar to keeping or breeding but it's a completely different ball game. Also, Cats have a few kittens and keeps demand high, no matter who you prevent from buying one. 8 kittens from a few known local breeders does not compare to 150+ slings from 3 or 4 breeders each. Also - With T's, when a "Noob" realises he/she can't sell 300 of his/her spiders, PRICES PLUMMET - or T's land up in the fridge, or in the veld. I can't wait to go hunting for B.smithi in the veld.

IN FACT

It would suit me just fine to site back and watch prices plummet and popularity fall, it will just make the T's I want cheaper and easier to get hold of... so ask yourself, why would I complain.

And frankly (lol), what did Creator say that is so worth applauding? C'mon Linn, are you just blowing smoke because he's helping you now? LOL. HS

Just stick to the point of this thread, which is simply, if you are new to this hobby and all you want to do is breed for money, at least spend some time raising Tarantulas, learn about them and gain some experience before diving in to breeding and landing up with spiders you don't like and slings nobody wants in a steadily saturating market.

Like I said, everyone is free to breed all day if they want - I certainly have no say in the matter and neither does anyone else. Breed, make money, my advice is just do it in moderation and with consideration. THINK about what you want to breed and do a bit of research.

@Linn, you are aiming at only the rare stuff, so go for it. You will either land up helping the price of rarer T's fall, or the complete opposite, where you will have a seriously banging collection of spiders for sale and people will get to know you for it. Who knows.

Right now however, people are writing to me asking "who the heck" you are, so there is a long road to walk yet.

HS

Replied by Martin on topic To Noobs who want to breed T's!!!
Buying mature T's feels like a bit of a waste to me . You need to grow with your T's if you want to be able to care for them properly IMHO
Stated by Jouda
Thought i would reply to it,since i am new. In my opinion, mature T's should be bought to start with, not saying two or three. Just maybe one, will state why.
- To see if you are up for it to handle a semi or full grown T
- Before attempting to get a lot of slings just to find out it is not for you
- Another bad thing is when its a sling is the sexing,so either a male or female. Sorry i don't have the heart to see my favorite spider
die, after 4 or 5 years due to being a male. That's why i stated,i might not even breed or not in the near future.
I went with two bigger T's,one chaco gold knee and one lasiodora parahybana. These are two opposites in attitude, one docile and one has an attitude to match size. Also by looking at my choices, obviously not to make money with. My third is a L.Klugi,he/she is 2-3 cm,i will see how it goes with having him and if i can successfully bring him up without losing him/her.
Hope this gives a different perspective.

I Would say the following.

Breeding is all good and well and we need to grow the hobby in some way, making rare t's more accessible might help but to me that was something to look forward to, to save up and prep for the rare T.

I have an issue with the new guys coming on board then breeding the daylights out of x,y,z and then they end up sitting with a ton of slings they cant sell and try to pass them off as something else that or cross breeding. The problem as i have stated many times before is more on the ethical side of things.

We all need to stand together and band together as a community to grow the hobby, the point is when you want to breed p. metallica or what ever you need info on who is breeding what and that way you can then make informed decisions on how many stock you would like to create.... basic business practice.

Plus for the newbie collectors they then know where to get what. (expanding the market)

May I ask how do you determine who's a "newbie" and who's fine to breed ?
