I use to nuke my peat when I first started in the hobby.
Nothing wrong with it, nothing wrong with tiring to eliminate some of the nasties in the substrate.

I stopped nuking the peat when I went over to 40 spiders, as that was allot of time and effort spent standing by the microwave and waiting for the stuff to cool off before I could use it.

Now I just use hot water.

Ok I'm not going to microwave the next peat I use. I hate doing it anyway it just takes long and then it leaves condensation which bugs me anyway. I'm a bit anal when it comes to that sort of stuff. I also take personal offence when my T's move the furniture or leave bolusses(boli)/poop in their water bowls.

I think in the short time a sterile enviroment is alright, but in the long time it can be a problem as the immune system basically shuts down
