Stefan who studies these spiders has said that what we have in the hobby is probably an undescribed species and NOT huahini. What have these been bred to to get all of the spiders in the hobby? Who knows?
H.gigas. Once again, same as above. What we have in the hobby is probably an undescribed species. The scientists that are working on Hysterocrates have asked everyone to name their species according to where they have been imported from and the month. That way people can breed the right species together. What we have in SA is not H.gigas purely (or even possibly at all) so that 'species' is a total mess up, possibly worldwide.

The above statement was made, doesn't matter by whom. I need to know if you have knowledge of this has it been confirmed by experts ? This is just me trying to gain more background, please help if possible. If its true, people should know the risks, and if possible could someone actually inspect molts to confirm if they have the true species ?

Thanks upfront

I'm sure you have noticed certain people name their spiders with a sp and then name of the location.
It has been happening for a while now and don't think it is law it is just being practised.

Hysterocrates sp. 'gigas' - Cameroon Red
Orphnaecus sp. "Samar" - Samar Cave Tarantula
Orphnaecus sp. "Cebu"
Iridopelma sp. Recife - Recife Beauty

Some species can't be mated together, so might not be a big issue.
Another thing, we don't know where they have been imported from so it won't help to put names to them.

Unless someone comes in and studies the species and does DNA testing to determine what the spider are it not going to be that easy..

But yes Stefan is a professional in the field and has vast knowledge of tarantulas.

When you say "know the risk" what do you actually mean?

By knowing what you have to offer, not a maybe or a broad selection within the name. There must be a way to inspect the tarantula or molt to see if it fits the description ? Sorry I am just inquisitive, and I care for something I'm involved with.

Just like Jake mentioned the hobby tends to name species incorrectly. Someone goes to cameroon finds a spider that "fits" the description of Hysterocrates gigas and sells its to a hobbyist.

I assume you are talking about Stefan Phalagorn? As he stated on the Haplopelma minax that was in the hobby which is also incorrect and has not been called Haplopelma sp "Big Black"

There are numerous examples available. I think what normally happens is that that if the species is not described then they use the area it was collected from eg: Harpactira sp Robertson

You are more than welcome to lookup the paper for the species in question and then compare the description to your specimen. Only problem is that you really need good experience to achieve this and sometimes you still will not come right.

The problem will be solved only once a new description is out for the undescribed species specifying the differences.
