"Fourthly, there are laws against importing of spiders hence the need for permits to do it".
Where is this law?
The Provincial conservation ordinance does not say you cant import tarantulas.
and it is for this reason that tarantulas found there way into the pet trade in SA in the first place.
Yes, conservation will confiscate tarantulas if they catch you importing them, but then they can be challenged in court (if you have the time and money).
The white paper that conservation will use in their defence has held in court on one occassion that I know of, and then they were dealing with a guy importing snakes.
to my knowledge, this white paper hasn't held for guys importing tarantulas (but I stand to be corrected)
my point is, there is no actual law against importing tarantulas - if there was, there would be penalties attached, but there isn't. At this point all conservation is doing is confiscating if they find...not fining anyone, not jailing anyone.
I do believe that a law is on the way though that will require permits to keep and breed etc - but who knows how long that will take to create and implement...
