The Bonzai culture started in China around 6000 years ago, if I recall correctly. Herdsmen in the Chinese highlands found that trees would "miniaturize" due to constant grazing by hungry Chinese livestock or something, then took a few home for the Mrs to admire, hoping to impress and get lucky, which they did if looking at the current population.
It is a myth (or misconception) that they must be starved to become Bonzai. They need a LOT of nutrients.
It is a myth (or misconception) that they become Bozai because of the small container. Their roots are vital, but must be trimmed back often.
It is a myth (or misconception) that they must be indoors. They are Bonzai replicas of their Big Brothers and Sistas.
They are TRAINED into the marvelous shapes we see today.
OH, I forgot - they do NOT belong in a Tarantula enclosure.
