:spider: Hi I wonder if someone can tell me what I did wrong. Last night I tried to breed my Mexican firelegs. When I put them together the male immediately went for the female and he bit her. I struggled to separate them but eventually got it right. I immediately removed the Female and put her in an ICU tank. Sadly she died this morning. I cant understand what went wrong?? They were the same size. Usually I hear of Females killing the males. This is the first time I hear of a male killing the Female. I am still in shock! So much for my breeding attempt.

Strange indeed,

I did a little experiment with my B. Emelia. The male and female are the same size.
At first I let them spend more and more time together, and it ended up that they shared a cage for about 6 to 8 weeks without any problems. I removed the male about 2 weeks back.
The female started burrowing madly the last 2 days and I flooded the cage as well.
So hope to have good news soon

How did you introduce them to each other?

I don't think just moving the male in is not the safest bet from the info I have gathered. putting the male into a smaller enclosure with in the females enclosure could give you some indication if they are interested by tapping before you release him in unknown territory.

These are only things I have read, some more experienced guys can maybe help out if I'm on the right track.

What Dimitri Asked:

Please take a picture of your male for us?

Are you sure it is a Mature male?

Sorry to hear that, first time I have heard about a female spider dying, but males will sometimes defend themselves.
There is a whole lot of things that could of caused the mating attempt to go wrong.

How did you sex the female?
Just a guess, but assuming that you might have put the male too close to the female and possibly forced the interaction. He felt threatened and defended himself.
Best is to put the male far away from the female so that he can pick up her scent and you can gauge the reactions from that. This could take a few hours at times, so patience is required.
