Jake, thanks, great/ interesting thread. Just a thought, if you buy the peat in a brick-form, can't you saw a flat piece off at the thickness you require and then stick it against the back with either compressed damp peat, or some other way.You then just need to support it at the bottom or with the same sticks & stuff you used anyway?
The reason I ask this is because I sawed off a piece I needed for some small enclosures and it came off like a plank. Already hard, compacted, dry and nice and square. It's quite hard work though and you have to use a wood saw with big teeth.
