Greetings peeps,

So after reading Uncle Charlies communal thread, it got me thinking of starting a proper communal. The current one i have consists only of 3 P. striata, so its time for a bigger one. I was thinking of housing 10 to 15 H. Maculata together in a communal setup. I have done some reading and it seems that there are mixed results with this species.

Does anyone have any exp with this or any advice with H. Mac's?

Still no answer...

All I can contribute is that I have heard that it can be done... how true it is I dont know.

This is what i read as well, i have even seen pictures of a setup with about 30 adult H.Mac's living together. But it seems to produce mixed results with some having Large communal's to others have one big spider.

I think that is a good idea, but i also think that the more there is the less territorial they might be. as they might get used to there being so many from slings, think a setup of about 20 in a nice big enclosure might work very well.

From our metallica communal I have provided massive space for them and they still live together

I agree with with Dimitri about space, I would give them a fair amount of space, I would consider doing a tank that is 450 X 300 X 300, it is worth a try and see what happens. I know a couple of people have spoken about it, but I have not seen a documented communal in SA.

At the end of the day you might end up with a communal that works or you might just end up with one big female and maybe an egg sack attached.. :dad :deal

If you got the spiders and the space then why not?
Or try to do a test, take 7 into a smaller enclosure and the rest into a larger enclosure and see the out come.
