Yup, that's the one. Will search for one when I go that way again. I believe they are found around the swamps and plains up toward Maun and magadi gadi, where many wind spiders come to your night light.

Weekend Baboon Spider Challenge from Ian Engelbrecht :

Many of us will be travelling to interesting places this weekend. I'd like to issue a challenge for all interested to try and find one baboon spider, photograph it, and post it here and on the SpiderMAP VM. You can search for baboon spiders under rocks where they make messy silk tubes to live in, or you can search for their large, silk lines vertical burrows in open ground. Once you've found one and photographed it, put it back where you found it, and share your discovery.

The spider pictured here is Overdijk's Lesser Baboon Spider (Harpactirella overdijki), a widespread species in the north-eastern parts of South Africa.

I was thinking of doing some tarantula spotting in December, but can't reach a decision on where the best place for that will be.

I have found two mm baboons in North West. It was while I stayed on a plot about 6 km's from Buffelspoort dam. Not sure of the species though. One I found in the Kitchen in the morning at about 5am and the other one i found in the bath after I came home from work. They were found about a year and a half apart so I don't think there is only a small colony in that area. Never found it.






The quality of the photos for the second one is a bit bad but was the exact same species as first. (I think)
