Can anyone help please? I got myself a Nikon D3000 camera with a standard 18-55mm lense and a friend donated a Vivitar 28-200mm macro lense for me to use. My question is, do you get a converter for this combination, where can I buy it and at what cost? Needless to say, I'm not in the photographic industry and don't know much about it.

Hi Snarf

Quick google tells me that you should be able to get a Vivitar lens for the Nikon Camera.

Each Camera manufacturer has their own standard lens connection, so they are not cross compatible, which is why you would have to specify which camera you have when buying a 3rd party lens.

IF the lens doesn't fit currently, it is probably for something else, like a Canon or a Sony.

Don't know if there are adapters since adding extra distance between the lens and the optical sensor will result in the photos not framing properly and most probably black corners or general blurred images.

Snarf, I'm also not a photo/camera expert, but I do know there is some limitations on the compatibility and backward compatibility on lenses.

If the lens has the Nikon F mount, you shouldn't have a problem. :)

Here is a link you might find useful.

Thanx guys. The Vivitar lense I have does have an adapter (Kentar auto tele converter 2x) on it but neither fits my Nikon. Antrax I'll check out the site, thanx.

There is a place in Randburd called Caz Camera's. They are in Oxford road just off Molibongwe. They might be able to help you with a converter. You are going to loose quality and you might need to use manual focus.

Stalker, so it would be better if I get myself a Nikon macro lense, but at what price?
