You have a point there cerat ,it also depends on how you start out ,if you start with the more interesting and challenging specie you will get bored of the hobby quickly ,luckily for me I started with one 'easy' tarantula and from there moved up to other species .

Sometimes people also want to do it for the cash sake and when they see they not making enough money they leave

To prove Cerats point...i was one of those who jumped in with a bang and i was on here daily reading every thing and buying left right and centre......and then one morning i woke up and i had tooo many spiders to care fore and i was getting a bit bored and frustrated with the work......and things at the office bombed out.....so i got rid of a lot of spiders to reduce my numbers......i think this is where most people just get out...and now i have re organized my hobby to soot me better......l now come on here once in a while, enjoy my spiders again and have cut my cricket bill and the work by 2 thirds!! i have realized that i do not have to have all the spiders on the list!! i am now once again a happy light saber swinging :starwars: ,chainsaw wielding :chainsaw: ,T collecting :spider: lunatic! Me is happy!!

@ Charlie. It doesn't matter if you get the rare species quickly. When you have a real love for spiders, you can get them as a first spider and be happy to watch them for years to come.
I can still sit and watch my first regalis eat a roach for an hour and be totally amazed after having her for 5 years and spiders for close to 20. Always something new to learn.

I would say that 60% of the people in the hobby are in it more as an investment than love for spiders. Most people think that they can breed and make money while others will probably buy a few to grow them a little and then sell for a profit.

Lastly, yes people get bored very quickly but i cannot understand how people just sell their collections just like that. With all respect would any of you sell your dogs, cats, birds or any other pet for a quick buck?

You should learn to love your tarantulas as you do for your other pets!

I'm wondering if there is a seasonal pattern like this. This was my first winter as a tarantula enthusiast and I must admit that I felt quite a lull in the hobby. Does this happen around this time every year?

I have never considered leaving the hobby but obviously others do because I have never seen so many collections for sale. It's a real pity and it reminds me of the "cute puppy syndrome", once the animal is no longer exciting the love is lost. It's not really fair on the animals if you consider that these collections have been kept at "keeper specific" temps and feeding schedules which will now be more than likely turned upside down.

I do understand that when a loved one falls ill or finances are short, one needs to make provisions and therefore make the sacrifice, my heart goes out to those enthusiasts.

Some people also just leave the hobby out of pure trust issues, with other members.
Really.
