For some reason, I doubt people would just let unwanted T's "free". The spider has value, it can be sold or it can be given away. I don't doubt it has been done, but I'm fairly sure it has happened a handful of times.

I'm all for the importing of new species and new blood. I would kill for an Avicularia diversipes, how else can that happen? People are importing, without a doubt and WE are supporting them by buying their stock. If import is controlled and a quota is implemented, what could the effects be? If the imported T's are kept at a high price, people that are not serious about the hobby (who could potentially let them go) will not buy them.

The following is a QUESTION, I am not pointing fingers nor am I making any accusations.
I have seen Orphnaecus sp. Blue doing their rounds. this species was only described about 2 years ago, is it possible that they were bred locally? What difference does it make if they were not bred locally, I'm amped on a new specie in SA.

So I was just wondering... If we ever do get the permits for local species they would never let us keep OBTS as they are not native and are invasive. So it made me think if the guys with current permits keeping OBTs are actually allowed to keep them... Also, are permits not only limited to a few species, and a few specimens of each specie...?

I have never applied for a snake permit, but heard that you need to be part of a herpetelogical society for a certain amount of time before you get a permit? Is this true?
Wish we could get some feedback about local permits, but i know it was quite a fight with local snakes, so could take a few years still for it to be finalized.

If you need some info on herp permits, and the battle the herp societies went through the get the permit system set up, the best person to speak to would be Arno Naude of the Transvaal Herpetological Association.

If you have a permit for P.murinus, then you are allowed to keep them.
They might not be native, but the genus is found in SA which is why you need a permit for any species in the genus.
As for being invasive, they have never been proven to be invasive that I know of.
I have a permit for P.murinus (As well as some other species). Not sure about anyone else though.
Permits in Gauteng are for specific species and only a certain number of spiders per species. Not sure about other provinces, but assuming its the same.

As far as I remember, he was at the NatCon talk a few months ago.
