Best advice I can give you, honestly, take my word on this, FORGET VENTRAL SEXING...
Take the dried and shrivelled exuvium and pour a bit of boiling (or hot) water into the body cavity. The water will unshrivel the abdominal skin. Steaming it over a boiling kettle also works, but that usually burns the crap out of my shaking fingers. Also very difficult to hold both an exuvium and a glass of wine, AND focus on both.
