i also tried to keep crickets, had a colony of about 200 adults, got some pinheads once. the adults died, the pins died and seemed to just dissapear.
with all my feeder insects i use crystal water, buy it for 5 rand a small tub, works great, no mess or drowning. i kept the tank clean but yet they still had a bad smell, cricket "grub" for food works good, has lots of protien which i also get for 5rand a small tub.
but you will not know if you do not try it yourself. :)

Hi
I find that if I feed my crickets grub, apples, green beans, lettuce, carrots ect they seem to live from pin heads to adults. I remove the dead 1s but I have never kept them going from generation to generation. Always finished my crickets before they could multiply. Think I needed more cause i would normally only get a tub or 2
