True spider ID please. was created by andre
Hiya

I've found this spider on my patio, webbing from the Ivy, the location is cool, dark and quite. (if that helps any)

I live on the East Rand.

This is just my opinion.
It reminds me of the Eresidae family.
The one I am familiar with is pure black, having the common name: black velvet spider.

This one you have could be the Stegodyphus sp. or the Seothyra sp. The Dresserus sp. is mostly found in South Africa, so is most likely.

Here is a picture of a Dresserus kannemeyeri specimen: www.flickr.com/photos/stanislav_macik/4960905123/

A more frontal shot should help as well.

Well that's my guess :)

That doesn't look like a friendly spider

But why if I may ask would you say it comes from the "black velvet spider" type?

The greatest treasures are not gold, nor jewels, nor works of art. They can't be held in your hands, they are held within your heart. For worldly things will fade away as seasons come and go. But the treasure of true friendship will never lose it's glo..

Obviously the black colour is different, but the over-all large abdomen shape and from the limited angle the carapace looks similar to me.

But there are thousands of different spider species in South Africa, so this is just my guess, an uneducated one at that.

A better front shot and if possible, the webbing where is was found would also help in identifying it.

Could an orb weaver species as well.
