We use them, usually only in the winter and we modified it with a type of switch so that when it comes to a certain temp it would switch off automatically. It does the job without burning the house down atleast  :) :silly:

I only used them in winter but also use the metal ones and never had a problem.

I use the laminated plastic ones now but have found that they get freakishly hot, the blastic even browns like a roast chicken in some areas.

Thanks bushpilot, these are the ones I am referring to that also caused Dave his horrible accident. I do not trust them at all!

I have also noticed the metals ones do not last as long, but at least they do not overheat and cause fire risks!

I should also state that I do not use heat pads for my T's - only my reptiles. I used to keep my T's in a room with a thermostat that controlled the whole room's temperature but since moving into a studio apartment I don't have that luxury anymore.

But so far I haven't had any issues, all my T's seem to handle room temperatures without any hassles. I suppose I might have to look at heat pads in winter, but I am skeptical about using them with T's since they can dry a tarantula out and kill it almost as quickly as direct sunlight if they are too close to the enclosures.
