Thank you guys, I think I am going to give it a try and see how it goes and how my T's respond to the new feeders. Just not looking forward to the messy part, but I think sometimes you got to change as change is as good as a holiday.

Hi Vixen, how did those silkworm feeders work out? I got some silkworms from my brother's son. Purely coincidence, as my brother scolded him for not feeding the worms regularly. He then politely asked me if the spiders would eat silkworms and my brother and I shared a smile. I told him we should try and see what happens.

The little boy was both shocked and ecstatic at the same time, by the speed and aggression my B. vagans took the silkworm. Then fed one to my N. chromatus and the boy smiled from ear to ear, when the process was repeated. He now had an excuse for getting rid of the silkworms and a new quest........to convince his mother to let him have a tarantula ! :laugh:

Suffice to say, he is slowly starting to convince her , after her first reaction was one of pure horror, she is coming around and we are giving her time to get used to the idea. He was back here today and we negotiated an idea of preparing my smaller B.vagans (5 cm) a new enclosure, that would be escape proof. (he has a little sister) and is himself a little clumsy and forgetful. So , soon we will have a new collector and enthusiast. :woohoo:

I couldn't help but laugh and smile at the same time as I read your post Deon, that is pretty impressive. I have not gone over to the worms as yet, want to finish up the crickets I bought first and then I will indeed make the switch.

And since I am moving at the end of this month I can finally expand my collection. No more limitation, and that is pretty exciting, but now the question remains... What do I get next, old world or new world...

But to get back to the topic, I am defiantly going to switch feeders to worms, I mean even as a kid I loved the silkies and it will be so much easier than the crickets.

All good fun Vixen, just remember, the silkworms are only available for a short period. I'm sure you already know that, but their season is almost over. All the well fed ones are starting to spin now.

Unless you intend getting some pupae's for moths and feeders next year. That will ensure you have many feeders next year. Have to hurry though.

By the way, they're not that messy at all.

OR unless you have the special silkies with the multiple generation gene!!! I love feeding silkworms, the spideys love them and in my opinion the best food for almost any reptile and spidey. And i havnt seen any more of a mess with silkies than with any other feedstuff. Maybe our kiddies just neat eaters! Only our one lady have never liked silkies. she walks to it, touches and then literally shivers and walks away. otherwise we only feed roaches. I hate crickets. stinky, jumpy, die easily and too much other problems. Roaches are the way to goo!! also crickets will kill me on finances.

I have heard that if you put the eggs in the fridge for a period of time(not sure how long) and take them out your eggs will hatch. You get special silkworm chow that is like a gelatine form. You can get it here.
