TOPIC: Swimming pool for my T

Swimming pool for my T 12 months ago #26098

Hi guys i have just installed a new swimming pool for my H. gigas(Cameroon Red baboon).
It seems to love it! When i put the T in he went straight for the water and under a rock.
It stayed there for almost 2 hours. I though it might have drowned so i took it out only to find that it was still 100%.

I saw a video on YouTube where the H.giga was "swimming" and then grabbing onto a branch! Would it be ok to feed them fish then? i mean what other reason is there for them to swim?

Re: Swimming pool for my T 12 months ago #26112

I think they can catch fish. I made a pool like that for my gigas when she was still smallish, and she filled the entire pool with peat after a few weeks. It was a bit disappointing and quite swampy with all the water absorbed by the peat, but she didn't seem to mind.

When she goes into her adult tank, I'll try that again, but will try to separate the pool from the substrate somehow...

Well i think swimming or submerging themselves is probably a self defense technique rather than fishing. Maybe this swimming business also involves catching insects near the water

Know it's off topic just need to ask. Does anybody have gigas slings available??

You can take an Aphonopelma to crickets but you can't make it eat!

Yes that video was awesome and that enclosure was at first a weird design but i have to admit that having a 2 part enclosure so that your H. Giga can take a swim was awesome, would love to have enclosures like that one day!
