I would like to thank each and everyone for their input in this thread, in particular for Scarab who helped me with the final identification after the molt and sexing.

So... The long lasting answer is: Grammastola pulchripes (Female)

Implementing that on a forum bases system is going to be a pain in the #$% for the admin lol
Not a bad or good idea though in my view.

Only reason I'm against bidding is because I feel T prices fluctuate waaaaaaay to much and having a bid system on the 'only' SA Tarantula 'society' won't help stabilize the already dodgy market.

I'm unable to take a peek inside with out destroying it further as its glued together.
My friend bought it at a petshop as a female and would like confirmation to the best of out knowledge.

I'm not sure as i usually check the inside under a microscope (He doesn't want me to dismantle it lol)!

It is hard to tell from the pic, but are your taking about a missing pectine?

If so, I am not sure why that would happen?Perhaps through a bad moult? an injury through handling?
Do you keep it in a communal setup? It can quite often happen that they incur injuries from other scorpions.

Not sure, but it will be fine.I presume that it should rejuvenate through moulting, like other appendages?

Good luck:-)

Well the sooner you take the molt out the easier it is to open it up cause its still moiste.

If im at home and I see a sheddng take place I give the Ts a good couple of hours and then make sure he as turned over and moved away from the shedding
Then I do a snatch and grab. with out even bugging him .

I would handle an adult transvaalicus by the tail. But only if it is coldish (not too active or agro). Mine grips you with its pincers immediately if held by the tail, but like scorpion said don't let go!
I would also not advise ever handling parabuthus especially transvaalicus and granulatus.

P. capensis vs P. planicauda

Distribution differs
P. capensis shows sexual difference in male and female whereas P. planicauda doesn't.
P. capensis is different on 2nd metasomal segment to rest of tail wheras P. planicauda isn't

...as far as i can remember :S

Thanks ;)

He really is an impressive specimen. Damn, that tail is bad ass!

I've got two of these, a male and a female. Both of them are very easy-going. No aggression at all when I re-homed them recently. My girl also got a little pond in her encolsure, and I watched her dive right to the bottom in it! The male sits at the size of your gigas, Karin, the female is smaller (3.5 or 4 cm).

Definitely one of my favourite species

Cool! when he matures and if you need a female for him, give me shout. :)

He's still far from mature though, males normally mature into big(+-20cm) boys.

I had a L.parahybana male that was 21cm when he matured, but now
I have a mature male who is small, around 15-16cm.
I guess that came down to how much they were fed while raising them. :)

JoNeS wrote:
My Avic has a tendency to make a web in the lid of it's tub.

I have provided it with plastic leaves, bark and a branch which it only uses slightly. Most of the webbing goes on the lid. It has always spent most of it's time hanging upside down since I've had it.

Is there a way I can prevent it from webbing on the lid as it is difficult to feed or mist without destroying the web?

Yes. Put it in a cage made for arboreal tarantulas:

(Uploaded with ImageShack.us)

or ...

(Uploaded with ImageShack.us)

Lastly, if you perform a search using the Search Forum utility at the top of this page, or just about any other forum, using the keywords arboreal cage you should eventually find a bunch of other ideas for arboreal cages. In nearly all cases, the idea is to allow the tarantula to build its nest towards the top ( It's what they do! ) and arrange for getting into the cage for feeding, house keeping, and such through one side or the bottom.

I hope this helps. Best of luck.

Enjoy your little 8-legged buddy!

Hi,

this is a friendly caution.

I have seen many warnings on various forums of being wary of exotic pet scams.

Unusual, rare species of everything is being offered for reasonable prices. The sellers only seems to want to communicate electronically.

Many people have been burnt trying to buy all sorts of things.

Do as much veryfying before you part with your money.

It wouldn't surprise me if rare tarantulas are the next thing to hit the list of species being offered.

Just like you are passionate about protecting local species, so am I about Safety.

But if I addressed someone working unsafely in an aggresive manner or got personal, that person will immediately have a negative attitude towards Safety. Therefor, I will never get anyone around me to change their unsafe behaviour...

The current tarantula community should do their best to educate other keepers (new and old) in a positive manner. We can be strict about rules and legislation without being nasty.

We might not all like or agree with legislation (like no smoking anywhere except in your own shower), but we have to obide by it. It still doesn't stop me from discussing my dislike of the legislation with other smokers and having a debate about it. Surely I know I will never be able to change that silly law :(

If no one ever had the guts to protest against slavery, where would we be today? Would you own slaves or would you be one?

Have an open mind :) and enjoy and learn from the diversity on this forum :)

Over and out ;)

Well said. I agree that by being aggressive you wont change someone's mind, but scorpions was already made up when he started the thread.
Smoking is very different to baboon spiders. :) smoking has been proven to be bad for your health and others thats why there is a law. In the same way baboon spiders have been exploited and therefore need to be protected against over collecting which is why there is a law protecting them. Its there to protect OUR spiders.
On a different note, i accused scorpion of money making, because he mentioned that he has been in the petshop industry for years and thought it was unfair that the prices for snakes dropped because they couldn't make as much money. Would like to know what your angle is for taking away the permit system for certain baboon spiders(if thats what i understood by your original post) if its not for money making somewhere down the line...

I agree with what you are saying scorpion. when I started out (which wasn't long ago - April 2010), I was referring to my Chacos and curlies.

And with a pet store and specifically referring to beginners, the common name are mostly used.

But from experience, I have seen MANY Chilean rosies, but later discovered the NCR and RCF colour forms and the NCR being referred to as G porteri and the RCF as G rosea.

but anyway, in most cases people know what you are referring to, but I feel it is important specifically with confusing species (A geniculata, A seemanni, G pulchripes, any other striped knee) to use scientific names.

Obviously the specie of the slings will determine the optimal temperature and humidity levels needed.

In my opinion, only Avic slings need very special care. Other slings (Brachypelmas, Gramastollas, Nhandus etc) should be kept just like you would your other larger T's.

As Cascade mentioned - a heating pad should be more than enough during the coldest nights in winter.

Coco peat also known as coir pith, coir fibre pith, coir dust, or simply coir, is made from coconut husks, which are byproducts of other industries that use coconuts

All tarantula keepers knows what coco peat is.exept if you think tarantulas are kept on newspaper...

some qualities of coco peat are better than others...some soak up and keep the moisture very well, others not. they just make a thin layer and the water just lays on top.

for the holding water part that you cant understant....some keepers pref to keep the substrate moist..some keep it dry.. some species do molt easier when the substrate is moist...

i pref buying a block of palm peat. its inexpensive, and 1 block makes like 9L of peat..it holds moisture great,i mix in 2 cup of coco husks and 1 cup sand. The Ts love it. and its strong enough to support borrows.

it all comes down to the keeper....everybody has their pref of substrate. http://www.tarantulas.co.za/images/fbfiles/images/25117_1423989237118_1154345192_31206819_367540_n-20100809.jpg

But then it also comes down to the onwer to make the right choice and not to feed that roach to the Ts if you see it happen and if the roach went and rolled in the vasilene :-D ..

secondly.. I dont use vasilene for my roaches as long as you have got a really good sealing lid you wont have escapies ,,touch wood :-D
