Hi
I found this piece in the tarantulas keepers guide from (Stanley A. Schultz and Marguerite J. Schultz)
This is only a small part but my advice would be to buy the book from amazon.com, it is a must have for tarantula owners.
There are two types of mites, spring tail and those that crawl. The ones that crawl are a danger to the spider, the way I clean my tanks is to take out my spiders, and wash the tanks and all of its accessories with jic or bleach. But I rinse it out very well so that the jic or beach is completely out. One of my opinions would be is to not throw in a dead cricket, nor let one of the limbs stay in the cage after the spider clearly is not going to eat it, AND, clean out the cricket holder at least once a week!! Most of the mites come from dead crickets, and also from peat moss with leave type of structures in it. To get rid of the mites without cleaning is to dry up the cage but NEVER below 50% humidity. This is for all the spiders except for swamp dwellers.
Both the mites can live in very high temperatures and die at their freezing point. Thus heat will not affect them, but the freezer will. Lol…. Tried that one…………..
You can never get rid of the mites, but you can only control their number.
