Should this mating end up successful, I would have claim to the "locally bred" cliche.

The female shown here is sub adult. On introducing the male to her enclosure, things went very slowly. I had to prompt the male towards her burrow. He vibrated once, then it was all fun and games. The female came out of her burrow, almost on her back.

The male retreated, she followed.



This went on for about half an hour, untill she had him cornered. He turned around and started flirting back.



As everything happened on the side of the enclosure, I was able to get a good pic of the insert, I think rarely seen from this angle.

Unfortunately, offspring from this specific spider are NEVER cheap. For me they are exceptional because they are baboons, very hardy, very stuborn and VERY fiesty. Above all that, a M balfouri female on a silky white web is probably the most beautiful thing you will ever encounter in the spider world. (Depending on your taste as always.) Then of course, they are beyond rare, not only in SA, but also in other countries, not to mention in Sekotra, Yemen, their natural home.
